The broad and the narrow way |
Strive to enter by the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, shall seek to enter, and shall not be able. But when the master of the house shall be gone in, and shall shut the door, you shall begin to stand without, and knock at the door, saying: Lord, open to us. And he answering, shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are.( Luke 13:24-25)
⚠️If you struggle with scrupulosity, DO NOT❌ read this article.
There are undoubtedly more adult Catholics who are accursed than who are redeemed. Our Lord Himself assures us that'' narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!'' (Matthew 7:13-14). According to Suarez, The most common sentiment among Christians is that there are more damned than predestined souls.
Examining the renowned sermon of Saint Leonardo of Porto-Maurizio,
we attempt to determine the number of the damned through relative figures.
Look at the table below:
Quote | Source |
% Saved |
% Damned |
''From one hundred thousand, in whom life was always bad, you will find one who deserves forgiveness.'' |
Saint Jerome |

"Know, my lord, that at the very moment I expired, thirty-three thousand people died. Of this number, Bernard and I quickly ascended to heaven, three entered Purgatory, and all the others fell into hell'' |
Saint Vincent Ferrer |

99.985 |
"When I had to appear before the
Tribunal of God, sixty thousand people from all parts of the earth arrived at
the same time; of this number, three were saved through Purgatory, and all
the others were damned" |
A Franciscan Religious |

This table presents various estimates of the ratio between those who attain eternal salvation and those who go down into the pit:
- In the first scenario, Saint Jerome suggests that only 0,001% are worthy of mercy, while the remaining 99.999% cannot attain salvation.
- The second quote, credited to Saint Vincent Ferrer, indicates a slightly higher ratio, with 0.015% saved and 99.984% condemned.
- In the last excerpt from an anonymous Franciscan friar, only 0.005% of Catholics will find salvation, while 99.995% will be eternally doomed.
Based on the average of these quotes, 99.993% of Catholics will be sent to hell, and only 0.007% will enjoy the Beatific Vision.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori |
''O Christian! attend seriously to this. It is time you should put an end to your disorders and return to God; you should fear lest this will be the last warning that he will ever send you. You have offended him long enough, and he has borne with you long enough in your sins: tremble, then, lest he should forsake you after the next mortal sin. Oh! how many souls has this striking thought of eternity caused to retire from the disorders and dangers of the world, to live in cloisters, solitudes, and deserts! Unfortunate sinner that I have been! what is the fruit of all my crimes? a conscience gnawed with despair, a troubled heart, a soul overwhelmed with grief, hell deserved, and God lost! Ah! my God, my heavenly Father! bind me to Thy love.'' (Eternal Maxims - Saint Alphonsus Liguori)
