Here is the full transcript(in Italian) and our translation:
One of the things that has struck me most about you young people, about you here, is your ability to engage in interreligious dialogue. And this is very important, because if you start arguing: “My religion is more important than yours…”, “Mine is the true one, yours isn’t true…”. Where does all this lead? Where? Someone answered, where? [someone responds: “To destruction”]. Exactly. All religions are a path to reach God(1). They are – let me make a comparison – like different languages and dialects to get there. But God is God for everyone(2). And since God is God for everyone, we are all children of God(3). “But my God is more important than yours!”. Is this true? There is only one God, and our religions are languages, and paths to reach God. Some are Sikh, some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian, but they are different paths. Understood? However, interreligious dialogue among young people requires courage. Youth is the age of courage, but you can have the courage to do things that will not help you. Instead, you can have the courage to move forward and engage in dialogue.
We can extract the following erroneous
propositions from the text:
1. All religions
are a path to reach God.
2. God is God for
everyone (i.e., for every religion)
3. Members of all religions are children of God.
JUDGING THE PROPOSITIONS
1. All religions are a path to reach God.
Theological
censure: HERETICAL
This proposition directly contradicts Our Lord’s words, the Council of Florence (D 714) and the ordinary magisterium of the Roman Pontiffs.
''I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me''. (John 14:6)
''It firmly believes, professes, and proclaims that those not living within the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics cannot become participants in eternal life, but will depart "into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels" [Matt. 25:41], unless before the end of life the same have been added to the flock; and that the unity of the ecclesiastical body is so strong that only to those remaining in it are the sacraments of the Church of benefit for salvation, and do fastings, almsgiving, and other functions of piety and exercises of Christian service produce eternal reward, and that no one, whatever almsgiving he has practiced, even if he has shed blood for the name of Christ, can be saved, unless he has remained in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.'' (Cantate Domino, D 714)
''The Church of Christ, therefore, is one and the same for ever; those who leave it depart from the will and command of Christ, the Lord - leaving the path of salvation they enter on that of perdition. "Whosoever is separated from the Church is united to an adulteress. He has cut himself off from the promises of the Church, and he who leaves the Church of Christ cannot arrive at the rewards of Christ....He who observes not this unity observes not the law of God, holds not the faith of the Father and the Son, clings not to life and salvation." (LEO XIII, SATIS COGNITUM, 5)
''The Catholic Church is alone in keeping the true worship. This is the fount of truth, this the house of Faith, this the temple of God: if any man enter not here, or if any man go forth from it, he is a stranger to the hope of life and salvation. Let none delude himself with obstinate wrangling. For life and salvation are here concerned, which will be lost and entirely destroyed, unless their interests are carefully and assiduously kept in mind.''(PIUS XI, MORTALIUM ANIMOS,11)
2. God is God for everyone (i.e., for every religion)
Theological
censures: ERRONEOUS (a), SCANDALOUS (b), AMBIGUOUS (c) , if not HERETICAL (d)
a) If it downplays
the significance of the True Church as revealed by God.
b) This proposition leads the faithful toward
religious indifferentism.
c) This statement twists the dogma of
God's oneness to suggest that the One True God is the same in all religions.
d) If it denies
that there is only One True God and that He has definitively revealed Himself
through Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church or if it suggests that God can be
worshipped in false religions.
On the true
worship of God, Saint Gregory the Great teaches:
''The holy universal Church teaches that it is not possible to worship God truly except in her and asserts that all who are outside of her will not be saved.'' (Gregory XVI, Summo Iugiter Studio,5)
3. Members of all religions are children of God.
Theological
censures: AMBIGUOUS(a), if not HERETICAL(b)
a) If the
proposition deliberately confuses the two supposita (i.e., meanings) of 'children of God'.
This term can be understood in two different ways:
Naturally:In the
broad sense, God made us in His own image, and preserves and governs us by His
Divine providence.
Supernaturally:In
the strict sense, however, we are the children of God through baptism.
Being a child of God in the broad sense and
recognising His existence by the natural light of reason is insignificant for
eternal salvation.
On March 4, 1679,
the Holy Office condemned the following statement:
‘'Faith widely so called according to the
testimony of creature or by a similar reason suffices for justification.’’ (D.
1173)
b) If it implies
that all members of false religions are children of God in the same sense that
baptised Christians are. Only those who ‘'have received the laver of
regeneration and profess the true faith, and have not, to their misfortune,
separated themselves from the structure of the Body, or for very serious sins
have not been excluded by lawful authority’' (Pius XII, Mystici Corporis, 22) are sons and daughters of God in the supernatural sense.
